The Kohala Coast is the western shoreline of Hawaii Island, more commonly known as the Big Island of Hawaii. The Kohala Coast is situated in the northwestern portion of the Big Island, which is also known as Kohala. The Kohala Coast is one of the top resort destinations in the state of Hawaii, and shares the sunny, seldom rainy weather of the west side of the Big Island with the Kailua-Kona area. Although the inner portions of Kohala see a considerable amount of rainfall over the course of a year, the Kohala Coast has great weather for the vast majority of the calendar year. Geologically speaking, the Kohala Coast is among the oldest parts of the Hawaiian archipelago. In fact, the region takes its name from Kohala Mountain, a dormant volcano a few miles inland from the Coast. There are a number of historic attractions in the Kohala area, including the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, who unified the Hawaiian Islands in the late eighteenth century. His birthplace is a historic site near the town of Hawi, just to the north of the Kohala Coast. In addition to the scenic roads leading to and from the Kohala Coast, the region is served by two small private airports and the larger airport to the south in Kailua-Kona.
A drive along the road into the Kohala Coast from Kona International Airport on Queen Kaahumanu Highway takes less than a half hour, and includes an impressive visual tour of vast lava fields from ancient volcanic eruptions. This heavily tourist oriented section of the Big Island is internationally well known for its recreational destinations and resorts, although there are several kamaaina and local communities located in and around the Kohala Coast as well. Golfers can enjoy several world class golf courses, professionally designed to incorporate some of the best features of the Hawaiian scenery in which they were built. Although the weather is quite sunny throughout the year, dedicated landscape work keeps the golf courses and the grass of the resort communities a verdant green. Between the eight different major resorts on the Kohala Coast, residents and visitors can enjoy unique Hawaiian recreational attractions as well as great shopping and dining options. Most of the resorts also boast spectacular views of the ocean and lava fields in addition to outstanding spa facilities and pools. The rugged landscape and relaxing ocean provide a great backdrop to a relaxing Hawaiian vacation.
The Kohala Coast area is a region of great historic and cultural significance in addition to being a world class vacation destination. The town of Puako is home to the Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve, which showcases some of the most ancient artwork in the Hawaiian Islands. These petroglyphs are also on display at the Anaehoomalu Petroglyphs field at the Waikoloa Resort on the Kohala Coast. Similarly, the Puukohola Heiau provides a glimpse into the religion of ancient Hawaii, and has since been declared a National Historic Site. Of course, the primary attraction of the Kohala Coast is the ocean and the area’s white, sandy beaches. Hapuna Beach State Park is one of the best known beaches on the Big Island, and is a great destination for everything from boogie boarding and barbequing to sun bathing and swimming. A lesser known attraction in the Kohala Coast area is the wildlife, some of it native and some more recently imported. Animals ranging from goats and donkey to birds including the Hawaiian Pueo make their homes up and down the Kohala Coast and can be seen throughout the year.
