A Little About Hana
Hana is a small but dramatically scenic community located on the eastern coast of Maui. Hana is best known as the endpoint of the Road to Hana, a picturesque, fifty-two mile drive along the northern shore of the Valley Island. As of the 2010 census, Hana had a population of just less than two thousand, three hundred residents. The town is extremely isolated from other Maui communities, and covers a total area of three and a half square miles. Although most visitors enjoy the three hour drive along the Hana Highway, Hana is home to the Hana Airport, which serves Oahu, the Big Island, and Kahului Airport. Because of its location, Hana has maintained a unique, rural character manifested in local businesses and family stores. One of the best known of these businesses is the Hasegawa General Store, a century-old family store popularized by the 1960s tune “Hasegawa General Store” by Paul Weston.
Hana is home to a number of historic sites, such as the Hotel Hana Maui, an upscale resort, Saint Sophia’s Church, and the Hana Ranch Store. Hana is located about ten miles away from Haleakala National Park, which boasts a number of scenic lookouts and refreshing swimming holes such as the Pools of Oheo. Hana is right next to the Hale Piilani, an ancient Hawaiian temple, as well as the Kanahu Gardens, which are a National Tropical Botanical Garden. Hana Beach Park and Hamoa Beach are among the most beautiful in the state and a great spots for everything from barbecues and sunbathing to swimming and surfing. Hana also boasts the red sand beach of Kaihalulu and the black sand of Waianapanapa Beach State Park.
