A Little About Kapalua

Kapalua is a small resort town on the western coast of Maui in the state of Hawaii. Kapalua is a good example of the gradual evolution of land usage on the Valley Island from pineapple and sugar plantations towards tourism and recreation. Kapalua is built on land owned by the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, which was subsequently built upon and expanded to become a major tourist attraction. Kapalua covers a total area of about two and a half square miles between Kapalua Bay and Honolua Bay, including just over a half square mile of surface water. Kapalua has a relatively small population compared to some other resort communities such as Kaanapali, recording about five hundred permanent residents. Kapalua handles a much larger volume of tourists over the course of the year, although the number of individuals who actually take up permanent residence in the condos and homes around Kapalua is much smaller. Because of its location on the western coast of Maui, Kapalua offers outstanding views throughout the year. In particular, Kapalua is within visual range of Molokai and Lanai, especially from some of the higher rooms of the Kapalua Resort.

As with many major attractions in Hawaii, Kapalua is located near some of the best beaches in the world. Kapalua’s best known beach is Kapalua Bay, which has received a number of accolades, such as “Best Beach in America,” the “Best Beach in the World,” and “America’s Best Beach” over the last few years. Kapalua Resort itself is an all inclusive tourist attraction, boasting not only world class luxury accommodations but also an on-site gift shop, extensive dining options, and professionally designed golf courses. Although the easiest way to access Kapalua is by road or bus, the relatively new Kapalua Airport is located in the Honokowai area, just south of Kapalua Resort.
