Located on the Big Island’s North Shore is the town of Hawi. With less than one thousand residents at the 2000 census, this small community constantly bustles with life and activity. Once a sugar plantation town, Hawi has grown to be a tourist attraction with little shops and galleries that give it a unique, small-town feel. For prospective residents to the area, Hawi abounds with residential properties and complexes to fit any personal preference or budget. Acres of land are available for purchase at reasonable costs for those who wish to build their own homes in the Hawi area. In addition, there are homes of nearly every size to fit any family. Hawi is also filled with an assortment of recreational activities, attractions, and landmarks. Now an abandoned harbor, Mahukona Beach Park reflects the rich history of Hawi’s sugar plantation industry.
Snorkelers can swim in the clear, turquoise water, and may come across a shipwreck and old mill equipment while exploring the ocean depths and swimming alongside colorful fish. Although the park’s facilities include showers and restrooms, guests to the area should take caution as there are no lifeguards. Two miles from Hawi is the Original King Kamehameha Statue, a Hawaiian historical monument that pays tribute to a great member of the Hawaiian monarchy. In the nearby town of Kapaau is the breathtaking Pololu Valley Overlook located at the end of Highway 270. Smell the calming salt of the deep blue water, gaze at the stunning black sand beach, and marvel at the picturesque view. Just six miles from Hawi is the scenic Keokea Beach Park where strong waves break the shore and black boulders surround the area. The Park’s facilities include showers, restrooms, picnic pavilions and barbecue grills. Although beautiful, the Park’s strong waves and rocks make it a poor location for swimming. Hawi’s small-town charm and its many attractions make it a wonderful place to reside or to visit.
