A Little About Puako
Puako is a small coastal village located on the northwestern shore of Hawaii Island. Puako has been a sparsely populated community for several decades, and is fairly isolated along the scenic Kohala Coast of the Big Island. Puako has between four and five hundred residents, although the community encompasses nearly sixteen square miles of land and sea. Puako is a fairly well off community, with almost none of its residents falling below the poverty line. Puako is about twenty minutes of the relatively large town of Kona, which is home to the Kona International Airport. Queen Kaahumanu Highway, which passes through Puako and snakes along the entire Kohala Coast, is a great way to see the small enclave amidst the sprawling lava fields, huge volcanic mountains, and vast ocean around it. Puako is located on the eponymous Puako Bay, near the Fairmont Orchard Resort. Puako sees nearly year round sunshine, and sees less than half a foot of rain during any given year. This means that almost every day in Puako is a great opportunity to go sightseeing or enjoy some of the great beaches in the region.
Puako is just a few minutes away from Hapuna Beach Park, one of the largest and most famous beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hapuna is a great destination for not only swimming, but also for snorkeling in the crystal clear blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Puako is home to thousands of petroglyphs, which are ancient drawings carved on volcanic rocks throughout the area. The community is also a short drive away from the largest restored heiau in the state, which according to legend aided King Kamehemeha the Great in his conquest of the Islands. The larger area surrounding Puako, including the rest of the Kohala Coast and Northern Kona, offers a great variety of shopping and dining options, in addition to a number of spas and world class golf courses.
