A Little About Keauhou
Keauhou is a scenic resort area in the Kona District of the Big Island. Keauhou includes some of the premier vacation destinations on Hawaii Island’s Leeward Coast, such as the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa, and the Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona. These resorts have sprung up around the Keauhou area because of the outstanding vacation opportunities and recreational activities in the region. The Keauhou and Kona area are perhaps best known for the water spots available offshore, such as scuba diving, swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. Keauhou is bordered by Kahaluu Bay, which is found near Holualoa and Mount Hualalai. These scenic attractions were popular in ancient Hawaii as well as in the modern day. For centuries, members of Hawaii’s royal families enjoyed the picturesque beauty of Keauhou and the rest of the Kona District.
Today, the remnants of those years of visits are a tourist attraction of their own. The Keauhou region is rich in the archeological remnants of ancient Hawaii, including fishponds, temples, and even petroglyphs. Keauhou Bay was the site of Kamehameha III’s birth, and the Keauhou Holua Slide is also situated within the unincorporated community. There are a number of world class golf courses in the immediate area, as well as a variety of smaller neighborhood parks and recreational facilities. Keauhou is home to an impressive manta ray population, which are especially concentrated around the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa. Residents and visitors alike can snorkel or dive around the Bay and see the manta rays especially during nighttime. There are also a myriad of opportunities for fishing and boating in the Keauhou region.
