A Little About Wailuku

Wailuku is the seat of Maui County, formerly the center of the tourist industry on the Valley Island and currently a historic and cultural destination. Wailuku has a population of about thirteen thousand residents, although that figure may have fluctuated since the most recent census figures were released. Wailuku is situated near the entrance of the Iao Valley on the western half of Maui near the base of the West Maui Volcano. Wailuku covers a total area of about five and a half square miles and is located near the community of Kahului. Wailuku is the hometown of Shane Victorino and Kurt Suzuki, who play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland Athletics, respectively. Wailuku’s commercial district is centered on Market Street, which is known for its diverse selection of locally owned businesses. Market Street generally eschews larger, national chains in favor of family shops, restaurants, and bakeries.

There are nearly two dozen major historical sites in this charming old town, including the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District’s Chee Kung Tong Society Building, the Bailey House, and Kaahumanu Church. Wailuku is found about ten minutes away from Kahului Airport, and is roughly the same distance from the Pihanakalani Heiau and the Halekii Heiau. The Iao Valley, in Wailuku’s backyard, is both a sacred Native Hawaiian site and a place of enormous scenic beauty, such as the striking Iao Needle. Wailuku is home to one of the last working plantations in the state of Hawaii, the Maui Tropical Plantation, which offers both guided tours and a plantation shop. Additionally, golfers can enjoy Wailuku’s Waikupu Golf and Country Club, which boasts a clubhouse originally designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
