Kawaihau is the northeastern section of the Garden Island, stretching along the coast of Kauai between Hanalei and Lihue. Kawaihau includes a considerable portion of the island’s population, encompassing such communities as Kealia, Wailua, and Kapaa. Kawaihau has a diverse blend of villages, towns, and resorts, and is better known colloquially as the Coconut Coast. Kawaihau offers a variety of housing options, ranging from short term rentals and hotels to apartments, condominiums, and single family homes. Many of the apartments and condos in Kawaihau offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the mountains of Kauai. The term Kawaihau does not refer to one individual community, and the boundaries of the collective area are not definitively established. Perhaps the best known census designated place or community within Kawaihau is the town of Kapaa, which recently surpassed Lihue as the most heavily populated portion of Kauai. This suggests that much future population growth may be concentrated in the Kawaihau area.
Many people choose to live in Kawaihau because of the overwhelming natural beauty of this part of the Garden Island. Nature lovers can enjoy the Poliahu and Opae Kalaole Falls as well as Puu Ehu Peak and the Kealia Forest Reserve. Kawaihau is located just a short distance away from world class golf courses and even big box retailers in the midst of Lihue town. The Kawaihau region also boasts the Royal Coconut Grove and the Kealua Arboretum and the Papaya Plantation. As with many parts of the Aloha State, Kawaihau is home to an impressive variety of beaches such as Aliomanu Beach, Kapaa Beach, and Waipouli Beach. There are also plenty of spots in Kawaihau to fish and surf, as well as a number of art galleries and boutique shops.
