Meaning “cold chill” in Native Hawaiian, the town of Lihue is Kauai’s second largest community, with a population of less than six thousand. Residents enjoy sunny weather year-round, making Lihue an excellent spot for a summer vacation site and residential area. Lihue’s all-inclusive community center is home to the Lihue Airport, government complex, and the island’s main harbor at Nawiliwili Bay. In addition, the Kukui Grove Center, the largest commercial center on the island, is anchored by various big-box retailers, like a Costco, Wal-Mat, and Home-Depot, which provide residents convenient access to needed goods and services. In addition to offering all the residential necessities in its city center, Lihue offers prospective tenants excellent living quarters from which to choose from to fit any personal preference, family size, or budget. Residents of the Lihue area are able to choose from condominiums, apartments, townhomes, vacant land, and homes of various sizes to ensure satisfaction and comfort. Educational opportunities in the Lihue area are overseen by the Hawaii Department of Education. Wilcox and Kaumalii Elementary Schools, Kamakahelei Middle School, and Kauai High School are the public educational institutions in the area. Situated at the front of the Kauai Marriott Resort, the crescent-shaped Kalapaki Beach offers its visitors a long stretch of beautiful shoreline and sandy beach. Located at the mouth of the main seaport of Nawiliwili Harbor, Kalapaki not only has good swimming and surfing conditions, but picnic areas in the nearby Nawilwili Park, surf lessons, and kayak tours in the nearby. In addition, the Beach is located near the Anchor Cove Shopping Center for some quick and convenient shopping. Another attraction in the area is Lihue’s stunning 80-foot Wailua Falls, which exemplifies Kauai’s pristine beauty. Featured in the opening sequence of the television show, Fantasy Island, Wailua Falls can be viewed on a lookout near Ma’alo Road. Hiking is not advised. Various historic attractions pay tribute to Lihue’s rich history and culture. The Grove Farm Homestead, an 80-acre sugar plantation that once belonged to George N. Wilcox, sits on Nawiliwili Road and features a museum and the historic family mansion. Tour the grounds of the Kilohana Plantation, which also features a beautiful plantation mansion. Additional attractions of the plantation include a ride in a train, a stroll through a beautiful rainforest with lush greenery and refreshing creeks, picnics, and fruit picking in the plantation orchard.
For visitors who wish to experience an unforgettable, ethnically Hawaiian dining experience, Lihue offers several luaus within the area, like the Smith’s Garden Luau, the Luau Kalamaku, and Kauai’s Best Luau where guests can indulge in delicious Hawaiian cuisines, like kalua pork and poi while being entertained with the dances of the Polynesian islands. Recreational activities, like golf, are also available in the Lihua area. The Puakea Golf Course ranks as one of the best courses in Hawaii. The Kauai Lagoons Golf Club is another course from which to choose from that offers an excellent golfing experience. Furthermore, there are a number of parks, like the Kalena, Puhi, Laukona, Willko, and Peter Ryan Parks that have facilities like playgrounds and picnic areas. There are also a number of beach parks in the area, including Niumalu, Hanamaulu, and Nawiliwili Beach Parks. Year-round sunny weather, it’s convenient location to residential needs and services, and its close proximity to attractions and recreational activities makes Lihue an excellent place to live or visit.
