Hauula is a small town on the north shore of Oahu. Hauula is mostly a residential community, although the region also includes a shopping center. Hauula has a total population of about three hundred, seven hundred residents, a figure which has remained relatively stable for the last several years. Hauula covers a total area of about seven square miles, and includes land extending from the ocean up to the mountains above the community. Hauula is found in a more rural section of Oahu, and is home to a number of beachfront properties and parks. Hauula, whose name refers to a red hibiscus tree when translated from Native Hawaiian into English, was formerly a part of Oahu’s sugarcane economy during the early twentieth century. Hauula is home to just over one thousand residential properties, which are almost exclusively single family houses. There are both expensive and relatively inexpensive properties in Hauula, with the most valuable homes located near the beachfront.
Hauula is found about fifty minutes away from downtown Honolulu, although the town is only a half hour from the community of Kaneohe. Hauula is located between the towns of Punaluu and Laie, about fifteen minutes away from Kahuku. Hauula is home to Hauula Elementary School, although older students are educated in neighboring towns’ intermediate and high schools. Hauula is home to a number of scenic beaches, including Mahakea Beach, Aukai Beach Park, Kakela Beach Park, and Hauula Beach Park. Many residents of Hauula and the surrounding communities enjoy not only surfing and swimming, but also night time fishing along the coastline of Hauula. The local shopping center boasts a supermarket, a pizza restaurant, a post office, and a Mexican fast food restaurant.
