Waianae is a medium-sized town located on western shore of Oahu, only a short drive from Waikiki. The town’s modern history traces back to 18th century Hawaii, when Captain James Cook sailed along its coasts. With its numerous attractions and the lush, green Waianae Mountain Range in the background, the small town away from the bustle of Honolulu is an excellent place for a relaxing family vacation, a honeymoon, or to reside.
Visitors to Waianae have the convenience of staying at a number of hotels and resorts located in a section of the town called Makaha, which include the Makaha Resort, the Makaha Beach Canabas, and the Makaha World Famous Surfing Retreat. Waianae boasts an assortment of recreational activities and attractions that draw visitors and residents to it. For those who want to ride high waves, swim, kayak, sunbathe, or watch a Hawaiian sunset, there is an excellent and unforgettable beaching experience waiting for you in Waianae. Makaha Beach Park, with its waves reaching an average of fifteen feet during the winter, draws experienced surfers to its waters. It is recommended that novices refrain from entering the water during this time, as the waves can reach approximately thirty feet. During the summer, however, the beach is calm and is an ideal site for snorkeling, swimming, or kayaking. Another excellent location to catch some good waves in Waianae is Ma’ili Beach Park, named after the ili’ili, or numerous small pebbles, found near the beach. Like Makaha, Ma’ili’s waves are calm during the summer, making it a great place to swim and snorkel. A little further away near Kaena Point is the beautiful white sand beach of Keawa’ula, known to surfers as Yokohama Bay. This is where the ancient Hawaiians believed that the spirits of the dead would enter the afterlife. Whichever beach you prefer, an unforgettable and unique surfing, swimming, snorkeling experience is guaranteed. Whether you wish to participate in recreational water activities, watch the sunset with your sweetheart, or have a barbeque with the kids, the Waianae beaches are the best options to choose from.
In addition to offering its residents and visitors great beaches, Waianae also boasts a number of attractions and activities, including its Wild Side Specialty and EoWai’ane Tours that allow visitors to swim near dolphins, go whale-watching, kayak, or snorkel with fish and turtles in a beautiful coral reef. For a majestic view of the Pacific, take a hike on the lush Waianae Mountain Range that separates western and central Oahu. Standing at 4,025 feet, the mountain range’s highest peak, Mount Kaala, is Oahu’s tallest point. Visitors and residents can also enjoy a surplus of Hawaiian and ethnic cuisines. An assortment of restaurants and eateries in Waianae, including the Nanakuli Korean Barbeque, Faith’s Place, L and L Drive Inn, and Ka’aha’aina Café are guaranteed to provide delicious meals. Kuhumanu Farm and Café and Kahumana Café provide vegetarian options. For some shopping, make sure to take a visit to the Waianae Mall Shopping Center
Educational opportunities in the Waianae area are provided by Wai’anae and Leihoku Elementary Schools, Wai’anae Intermediate School, and Waianae High School, which are institutions operated by the Hawaii Department of Education. A charter school, Ka Waihono O Ka Na’auao, which educates children from kindergarten to the seventh grade, is also part of the census designated place.
An assortment of recreational activities and attractions, excellent beaches, and a number of ethnic restaurants to satisfy nearly every craving make Waianae the ideal place to have a relaxing vacation or to reside. Visitors should make a visit to Waianae a top priority when they visit the islands.
