A Little About Kaaawa

Kaaawa is a relatively small coastal town along the eastern shoreline of Oahu. The name of Kaaawa is a reference to a type of local fish known as the wrasse, a brightly colored fish indigenous to Pacific Ocean. Kaaawa has a population of less than fifteen hundred residents, dispersed amongst an area of just more than one square mile. Kaaawa is found along Kamehameha Highway after Kaneohe on the road to Oahu’s North Shore. Kaaawa is primarily composed of residential properties, although there are a few small commercial stores located along Kam Highway in the town. Kaaawa is home to almost five hundred individual properties, ranging from relatively inexpensive houses to beachfront mansions worth well over a million dollars. Kaaawa is found in between two other small, rural communities, Kualoa and Kahana (home to Kahana Bay). Kaaawa is not a well known community outside of Hawaii, but the scenery of Kaaawa Valley has been featured in a number of major Hollywood films. Some of the productions shot at least partially in Kaaawa Valley’s Kualoa Ranch include the television series Lost and Jurassic Park.

Kaaawa is home to its own elementary school, Kaaawa Elementary School, although many local residents send their children to private schools in downtown Honolulu. Honolulu is about forty five minutes away from Kaaawa, although Kaneohe is only about fifteen minutes distant from the community. Kaaawa’s beachfront is a popular location for sunbathing, swimming, and body boarding, and other recreational activities in the region include horseback riding and movie touring. Kaaawa is a great community for experiencing unspoiled, rural Hawaii less than an hour from the state’s largest city and population center.
