Honolulu is the economic center of and largest city in the state of Hawaii. Honolulu is located on Oahu, and technically encompasses the entirety of the island. Downtown Honolulu is found on the southern portion of Oahu, with various suburbs and secondary urban centers extending up and around the rest of Oahu. Honolulu has a population of nearly one million residents, living in properties ranging from apartment buildings and condominiums to single family homes, townhomes, and mansions. Property values in Honolulu also vary widely, from relatively inexpensive studios in Kalihi and Palolo to multi-million dollar homes along Hawaii Loa Ridge and along the shoreline of Kahala. Honolulu is a historic, economic, cultural, and social center for the state of Hawaii. The centers of state government are located near Honolulu’s city hall, as well as the state’s most important business centers and commercial landmarks. Honolulu is home to the tallest skyscraper in the state, the First Hawaiian Center, as well as the former holder of that title, Aloha Tower. Iolani Palace, the only former seat of a monarchy found within the United States, is found in the heart of downtown Honolulu next to the State Capitol and the Hawaii State Library.
Honolulu has easily the most expansive selection of shopping centers and retail outlets of any city in the state. Tourists from around the world travel to Honolulu in order to explore Ala Moana Center, the largest outdoor shopping center in the world. There are department stores, coffee shops and restaurants scattered throughout downtown Honolulu in the midst of a maze of skyscrapers and sidewalks. As part of a city requirement, every new structure in the urban core must be accompanied by a work of art (such as a sculpture or fountain), lending the city a distinctive artistic flair. One of the hidden gems of Honolulu is the city’s Chinatown, which is found after the business district on the road to Kalihi. Chinatown contains a wide variety of curious shops and restaurants that offer both great shopping and outstanding food. Chinatown is also home to some of the best florists and lei-makers in the state of Hawaii, making the region a favorite of teens during prom season. Downtown Honolulu is about fifteen minutes away from Pearl Harbor and Aloha Stadium, landmarks which are recognizable to most visitors as a war memorial and the site of the Pro Bowl, respectively. Honolulu has one of the best bus systems in the country, which serves the entire island seven days a week.
The numerous apartment complexes and condominiums throughout Honolulu offer spectacular views of the skyline, the mountains, and the sea. Many of Honolulu’s subdivisions are located on the mountain slopes leading up to the Ko’olaus, ensuring a picturesque panorama to both residents and visitors. Honolulu includes some of the best known beaches in the entire United States, including the world renowned Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Beach Park, which is home to an annual Fourth of July fireworks show. Honolulu has hiking opportunities as well as beautiful beaches. Diamond Head, a top tourist destination and an excellent day trip, is found only ten minutes away from the urban core. Honolulu is also home to the Honolulu Zoo and the Honolulu Aquarium, both of which are the largest facilities of their kind in the state. The main airport in Honolulu is the Honolulu International Airport, found along Nimitz Highway about fifteen minutes away from downtown. Honolulu is home to a unique fusion of food and cultures, resulting in a wide selection of Asian, European, and fusion restaurants throughout the city and Honolulu’s suburbs.
