A Little About Manoa
Manoa Valley is a beautiful residential area just a few minutes away from downtown Honolulu. Manoa is a relatively dense but upscale community that stretches from the Ko’olau Mountains to the mouth of the valley near Ala Moana and Kaimuki. Manoa’s homes are generally single family houses built fifty years or longer ago, although there are also a number of newer developments in the Manoa area. Manoa has generally warm and wet weather, meaning that the valley is characterized by beautiful green landscapes along the mountain sides and cliff faces. Manoa is home to an especially outstanding selection of educational institutions, including the flagship facility of the University of Hawaii. In addition to UH’s Manoa Campus, Manoa is home to two public elementary schools, Mid-Pacific Institute, Saint Francis School, and Punahou School. A fair number of condos in the Manoa area are dedicated to providing student housing for University of Hawaii attendees, in an attempt to supplement the University’s own dormitories.
Manoa has a small commercial center in the Valley alongside its educational facilities and residential neighborhoods, the Manoa Marketplace. The Marketplace and its immediate neighbors are home to most of the shops and restaurants in the Valley, including Waipuna Sushi, Boston’s Pizza, Safeway, Longs Drugs, and Starbucks. Manoa is also the place to find Manoa Falls, which is the endpoint of a beautiful hike along the Valley and Manoa Stream. Manoa Valley is home to the historic Manoa Chinese Cemetery and the Lyon Arboretum, which is home to a number of local plants and trees. Manoa is just a short drive away from Waikiki Beach, as well as Ala Moana Shopping Center, which is the largest outdoor shopping mall in the world. The Manoa Valley is served by Honolulu’s municipal bus system, and is plotted to be on the upcoming Honolulu rail system.
