Maili is a small enclave surrounding an eponymous beach park on the Waianae Coast. Maili is almost exclusively residential area, and has a rural character thanks to its location about an hour from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Properties in the Maili area are less expensive than many other parts of Oahu, meaning that a larger house or lot is more affordable. Maili experiences sunshine during almost the entire calendar year, and sees considerably less rainfall than other parts of the island. Although Maili is fairly far away from the major tourist sites and shops of Oahu, the Waianae Coast is home to a surprisingly thorough selection of goods and services. In fact, Waianae is home to a shopping center and a number of fast food restaurants as well as a satellite city hall and a substation of the Honolulu Police Department. There are a number of public schools along the Waianae Coast, including Leihoku and Waianae Elementary Schools, Waianae Intermediate School, and Waianae High School.
The best known attraction in Maili is Maili Beach Park, found just before Waianae and Makaha along Farrington Highway. Maili Beach Park is home to wide open spaces and impressive stretches of coastline, and is popular among kamaaina looking for a peaceful camping or grilling spot. The waters of Maili Beach Park are great for experienced boogie boarders and surfers, as well as for swimming and just sunbathing. Maili takes its name from the pebbles (ili ili) of Maili Beach Park, which were historically used for everything from fishing equipment to gaming devices.
