Portlock is one of the most prestigious residential subdivisions in the state of Hawaii. Portlock is a part of the larger Eastern Oahu community of Hawaii Kai, and is consequently privy to the same conveniences and opportunities afforded Hawaii Kai in general. Portlock’s houses are mostly constructed along a quiet coastal road off Kalanianole Highway, about five minutes from the center of Hawaii Kai. Portlock is home to some of the most expensive properties on the island, with many homes ringed by impressive stone walls and many lots decorated by towering palm trees. Many of the houses in Portlock have professionally maintained landscapes, and some have custom engraved gates guarding their entrances. The lots of Portlock homes are generally much larger than those of a typical Hawaii Kai or East Oahu property, while the homes themselves frequently have seven or more bedrooms. Some of the more spacious properties even have their own guest houses and private pools. As a result of these numerous amenities and the prestigious reputation of Portlock, property values in the community are in the multi-million dollar range. Overall, the character of Portlock is upscale and elite, rivaling communities such as Lanikai and Hawaii Loa Ridge. Crime rates in Portlock are extremely low, and the nature of the community ensures a pleasant ambience at all times of the day.
One of the primary reasons why people choose to live in Portlock is the community’s extremely desirable location. East Oahu in general commands a premium for its convenient location, and Portlock adds scenic beauty to that convenience. Portlock is located just steps away from the beautiful Pacific Ocean, and many of the mansions in Portlock possess beautiful views of the Ocean’s blue waters. Some houses in Portlock have views of both the Ocean and the Ko’olau Mountains, adding green accents to the blue panorama of the sea. Owners of Portlock homes can observe incredible views of Diamond Head and Maunalua Bay throughout the day, although the sunsets are particularly striking. Residents of Portlock can enjoy water sports whenever they choose, ranging from jet skiing and fishing to surfing and swimming. Many local parks maintain canoe clubs, and many private institutions offer kayaking and surfing lessons. Golfers can enjoy the several country clubs within a short driving distance of Portlock, while hikers can explore either Koko Head Crater or the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail. There are a wide variety of shopping opportunities within ten or fifteen minutes of Portlock, ranging from big box retailers and supermarkets to boutique stores and shopping centers. Koko Marina is located just up the road from Portlock, while Kahala Mall is situated in the nearby community of Kahala along Kalanianaole Highway. Koko Marina is home to the theaters closest to Portlock, as well as a number of local restaurants as well as a Starbucks, Foodland, and a Twenty Four Hour Fitness.
Portlock was not densely populated until the second half of the twentieth century. Before that time, there was an ancient fishpond and wetland area occupying much of what is now Hawaii Kai. Upon the expansion of Honolulu in the 1900s, many residential developments including Portlock began to spring up in the Eastern part of Oahu. Fortunately, the wave of suburbanization spared many of the natural wonders on the Eastern side of the island, including Haunama Bay, which is found about five minutes from Portlock on the road to Waimanalo. Haunama Bay is one of the best spots on the island for family swimming and snorkeling, and two other nearby beaches – Sandy Beach and Makapu’u Beach are favorites among surfers and boogie boarders.
